# Tags

Tags are shared labels you can apply to points of interest, markups and work orders. They are the quickest way to group related items and to filter down to just the ones you care about.

Each project keeps its own list of tags, and the same tag can be applied across all three features. Every tag has a color, which it keeps everywhere it appears, so a tagged item can be recognized at a glance.

# Apply a tag

Wherever tags can be applied, you will find a Tags field: when creating or editing a point of interest, in the markup designer, and when requesting or updating a work order.

Click the Tags field and either pick a tag from the list, or start typing to narrow it down. Applied tags appear as colored chips. Click the x on a chip to remove that tag from the item.

Suggestions are ordered by how often each tag is already used on that kind of item, so the tags your project actually relies on come first.

You need permission to edit an item in order to change its tags. If you cannot edit it, its tags are shown but cannot be changed.

# Create a new tag

If your project allows it, you can create a tag as you go: type the name into the Tags field and press ENTER or TAB. The tag is created and applied in one step, and becomes available everywhere else in the project.

Some projects restrict this, so that new tags can only be created by an administrator. In that case the Tags field will only accept tags that already exist, and a note under the field will say so. Ask a project administrator to add the tag you need. See Tags in the admin guide.

Tag names must be unique within a project, and case is ignored when checking: if Traffic exists, you cannot add traffic as a second tag. Typing an existing tag's name in a different case simply applies the existing tag.

A tag name can be up to 128 characters long, and can contain letters, numbers, spaces and the characters - _ . : / & ' ( ) + #. If something you type cannot be used as a tag name, a message under the field explains why it was not added.

# Filter by tag

Points of interest, markups and work orders can all be filtered by tag from their filter panels. Select one or more tags to see only the matching items. The points of interest filter also offers No tags, for finding points of interest that have not been tagged yet.

# Renaming, merging and deleting tags

Tags are managed for the whole project rather than per item, so a tag cannot be renamed or deleted from the Tags field. Removing a tag from an item only removes it from that item; the tag itself stays in the project.

Renaming a tag, changing its color, merging two tags together and deleting a tag are all done from the project administration section by an administrator, or by a member of a group with the Tag management role. See Tags in the admin guide.
